PARIS — (CNN) Police shot and killed a man after he tried to enter a northern Paris police station wielding a knife, a French Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN affiliate BFMTV.

The man was shouting “Allahu Akbar” and may have been wearing a suicide belt, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

A police representative confirmed to CNN that shots were fired near a station.

The attack happened in Barbes, north Paris, near the police station in Goutte D’Or.

It occurred on the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo killings in which Islamist gunmen killed 12 people in an assault on the offices of the French satirical magazine.
