WINTERGREEN, VA — (WMAL) After a warm start to the 2015-2016 ski season, winter resorts and ski clubs are finally opening their doors to guests.

Now that it’s cold enough for water to freeze, ski destinations have begun to cover their mountains with snow.

Jay Roberts, Vice President of Wintergreen Resort, told WMAL that they’ve been making snow since Friday.

“We made a little snow in December, but because December was so warm, it pushed off ski season a bit,” he said.

Wintergreen Resort opened for a few days during Christmas, but closed again by New Year’s because it was too warm for the snow to stick.

There haven’t been any natural snowstorms in the region, so Wintergreen relies on water-freezing machines that manufacture snow themselves.

Roberts said that he expects to open some of the slopes this week, and that advanced trails would open next weekend.

“It looks like we’ll stay open for the rest of the season,” he said. “The ski area will get bigger between this week and next.”
