CHARLOTTESVILLE, va. — University of Virginia fraternities and sororities are asking that their suspension by the school be lifted.

University President Teresa Sullivan suspended all Greek organizations last month after a Rolling Stone article detailed an alleged gang-rape at the Phi Kappa Psi house in Charlottesville.
But last week the Rolling Stone story unraveled after editors found discrepancies in the article. Now the fraternities and sororites say there is no longer any reason to continue the suspension, which was due to end January 9.
The “decision to suspend hurt the reputation of thousands of outstanding student leaders in our organizations who had nothing to do with the alleged events described in the article,” said the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee, the National Panhellenic Conference and the North American Interfraternity Conference in a statement.
A U-Va. spokesman would not say whether Sullivan is considering ending the suspension before then.
