WASHINGTON — (WMAL) If you’ve noticed daffodils sprouting in your garden this week, you’re not crazy.
Warm December temperatures in the D.C. Metro Area are causing flowers to bloom a few months early.
Jos Roozen, host of WMAL’s “Garden Sense,” says that about 30 percent of flowers in the District are blooming right now.
“Those are used up and they won’t bloom in the springtime,” Roozen said. “Because of the drought and the milder, early winter, they think that it’s springtime.”
Despite the early bloomers, Roozen said that he expects 60 to 70 percent of the flowers to bloom in a few months.
Gardening enthusiasts shouldn’t be too concerned.
The current weather pattern occurs about once every ten years.
“Maybe every ten, fifteen years you have that same cycle,” Roozen said. “I saw in in the early 1970’s all the time. Maybe about three or four years in a row.”
