Virginia State Senator Proposes School Bus Passing Bill

ARLINGTON — (WMAL) Virginia State Senator Barbra Favola introduced new legislation this week that will fine drivers who pass stopped school buses.

Many school districts in Virginia have already installed cameras on the buses so violators can be caught, but there is no system in place to issue citations.

The new provision will allow localities to mail the citations to offending drivers.

In the current system, documents must be presented to the drivers in person because the state government has not given the police or local governments the authority to distribute them via mail.

Many Virginia school districts support the effort to change the law, including the Arlington School Board, which has cameras on its buses.
