WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker claims that the team needs more black and Latino players because he says they are faster on the bases.

“I’m not racist, that’s just how it is,” Baker said.

Baker fielded questions at a special interview session yesterday, where he said that “with the need for minorities, you can help yourself — you’ve got a better chance of getting some speed with Latin and African-Americans.”

He said that he wants more minority players on the roster.

Baker also weighed in on Aroldis Chapmain, a pitcher on the team he used to manage, the Cinncinatti Reds.

He called Chapman, who is accused of choking his girlfriend during an argument in October, a “heck of a guy.”

“I’ll go on the record and say I wouldn’t mind having Chapman,” Baker said.

Baker joined the Nationals this year after being fired form the Reds at the end of 2013.
