WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier gave some surprising advice to people who may find themselves around an active shooter situation.
In an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes”, Lanier stated that people should prepare to be involved in a situation with a gunman.
“You’re options are run, hide or fight,” said Lanier.
She said of course, people should get out if they can should they find themselves in that situation. Even so, taking the shooter down would be the best option to save the most lives.
“Most active shooters kill most of their victims in ten minutes or less,” explained Lanier. “The best police department in the country is going to be about a five to seven minute response.”
Lanier said she was aware that up until this point, police have told civilians not to take action with someone aiming a gun. However, she said the case of an active shooter was a different situation.
