Local Uber Drivers Protest Unfair Compensation

Chicago taxi drivers stand holding signs and driving around City Hall refusing to take fares in protest of the granting of a city license to ride-sharing company Uber. Cab drivers say the company has an unfair advantage because they aren't subject to the same stringent regulations as the cab companies. Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti accused Mayor Rahm Emmanuel of favoritism as his brother is an investor in the company. 2/17/2015

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Uber drivers around the country are striking today, in protest of unfair rate compensation from Uber’s management.

One such protest is being held outside the Uber D.C. office by Uber Freedom, a driver’s rights group.

Although Uber’s cost to consumers is rising, employee wages remain stagnant.

Dave Sutton, spokesperson for the “Who’s Driving You?” campaign, said that the drivers are seeking a 60% rate hike and a tip option on the Uber App.

“Uber drivers across the country aren’t making the type of money that either they once were or have ever made,” he said.

“Uber drivers are unhappy, and this seems to reflect the sentiment we’re getting a lot anecdotally.”

Uber is a controversial subject in the transportation industry.

The company has battled complaints from taxi and livery cab services since its inception.
