5am – A/B Donald Trump to Host ‘SNL’ November 7. Live from New York, it’s Donald Trump! The GOP presidential frontrunner and real estate magnate will host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on November 7, the show announced Tuesday. His appearance comes almost exactly a year before Election Day, which will fall on November 8, 2016. Trump last hosted the NBC comedy show in April 2004. In his 2004 appearance, Trump boasted about being “a ratings machine” and plugged his then-new show, “The Apprentice.”
5am – C Water main break closes lanes of Rockville Pike. WASHINGTON —Lanes of Rockville Pike remain closed Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as crews work to repair a water main break that gushed water onto the roadway. Only one lane of northbound Rockville Pike gets by between Jones Bridge Road and Pooks Hill Road; two southbound lanes of Rockville Pike get by as well. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is advising drivers to use alternate routes for the Wednesday morning commute, and to avoid the area if possible. The 16-inch main broke Tuesday afternoon, causing water to pour onto the street.
5am – D In First Debate, Sanders Gives Clinton a Big Assist on Emails. (NBC News) – Hillary Clinton was a winner at the first Democratic presidential debate, but she has Bernie Sanders to thank for coming out of the contest mostly unscathed. By saying early in the night that Americans are tired of the controversy surrounding Clinton’s use of a private email account, Sanders essentially neutralized the Democratic frontrunner’s biggest weakness during the two-hour long CNN debate. Sanders’ move then allowed the former secretary of state to concentrate on her policy positions instead of having to defend her e-mail practices to millions of Americans.

6am – D New App “SketchFactor” Is Dispatching Alarmed Messages to Police in Georgetown. The secret surveillance of ‘suspicious’ blacks in one of the nation’s poshest neighborhoods. (Washington Post) — It was nearing closing time in March last year when a manager at Boffi Georgetown dispatched a series of alarmed messages. Observing two men yelling outside the luxury kitchen and bath showroom, Julia Walter reached for her phone and accessed a private messaging application that hundreds of residents, retailers and police in this overwhelmingly white, wealthy neighborhood use to discuss people they deem suspicious. The overwhelming majority of the people the app’s users cited were black. Was the chatroom reducing crime along the high-end retail strip? Was it making people feel safer? Or was it racial profiling? These are questions being asked across the country as people experiment with services that bill themselves as a way to prevent crime, but also expose latent biases. The application “SketchFactor,” which invited users to report “sketchy” people, faced allegations of racism in both the District and New York. Another social network roiled Oakland, Calif., when white residents used Nextdoor.com to cite “suspicious activity” about black neighbors. Taking it even further was GhettoTracker.com, which asked users to rate neighborhoods based on whether they thought they were “safe” or a “ghetto.”
6am – E Maryland News:
- The 100 ‘Drunkest’ Towns In Maryland: Where Does Annapolis Rank? (Patch) — Annapolis has landed at the top of another list, but this isn’t one to brag about. And residents may dispute the somewhat subjective ranking. But the Roadsnacks website, a data compiler that specializes in creating lists that rate communities on how ”snobby” or “redneck” they are, went there, compiling a list that rates the “drunkest” towns in several states – including Maryland. And Annapolis is ranked No. 1 as the drunkest city, with several other Anne Arundel communities making the top 100. Roadsnacks.net has compiled a list of the ”drunkest” towns based on the number of available places to buy booze, and by how often people are talking about drinking. The list also includes each town’s divorce rate. Not as shocking: College Park, the home to the University of Maryland, is No. 4 in the rankings. The No. 2 spot goes to Hagerstown and No. 3 is Bel Air.

- Aggressive Owl Attacking People on Popular Trail in Bethesda. (NBC Washington) — Beware of what’s flying above the Capital Crescent Trail. An aggressive owl is harassing people who use the trail in Bethesda, Maryland. Montgomery County Parks posted a sign warning about an owl attacking people between River Road and Dorsett Avenue. Del Wilber told News4 he was jogging when an owl clawed his head while he was running about 7 p.m. Monday. “I felt like something hit me from behind, like a bottle or a big stick and I fell to the ground,” he said. Del Quentin Wilber: @DelWilber: Was attacked by a rogue owl while running in Bethesda tonight. They are not so cute up close or when they dig their talons into your head. 9:13 PM – 12 Oct 2015
- INTERVIEW with DEL WILBER about his Aggressive Owl Attack!
- Officer distraught, desperately searches for confiscated K9 police dog. GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WJLA) — A respected Montgomery County police officer can’t get a straight answer about what happened to his K9 partner Chip , a five-year-old Belgian Malinois. In May, the Montgomery County Police Department forced Chip into early retirement. The move came only five weeks after Chip bit his handler’s left arm during a training exercise.
- Amtrak: Pets welcome aboard Northeast Regional, Downeaster. BOSTON (AP) — Amtrak says it will now allow passengers on some Northeast routes to bring along their pets. Under the program, passengers can take a cat or small dog on trips up to seven hours long. The service is available on the Boston to Lynchburg, Newport News, and Norfolk, Virginia, on the Northeast Regional service lines, as well from Boston to Brunswick, Maine, on the Downeaster route. Pet owners will have to pay an extra $25 to make a reservation. The service begins Oct. 12. Pets will have to be in carriers and the carrier must weigh no more than 20 pounds with the animal inside. - Rat fights pigeon in battle of New York’s most notorious pests. (NY Post) — Rats can’t live on pizza alone. This rodent was caught on video in an epic street fight that was hardly a contest — manhandling a hapless pigeon on a Williamsburg street. The nearly 3-minute video, called “Rat vs. Pigeon in Williamsburg, NY,” shows the rat dragging what appears to be an injured pigeon down the block — stopping every few seconds to take a nibble out of its big catch. At one point, the bird flies away, but not for long. “You only see this in New York,” someone can be heard saying on the video. The rat sprints after his lunch, bringing the pigeon back down to the ground. Eventually, the rat realizes the struggle is over, disappearing into a bushy area to devour its meal. The scene hearkens to a Halloween episode of “The Simpsons” in which Bart’s evil twin creates a Pigeon-Rat costume by sewing the back of a pigeon on top of a rat. In the show, the pigeon attempts to escape, but fails because the rat is on its back. Shortly after, the rat makes a run for it into a mouse hole but is ultimately unsuccessful because it can’t fit through the hole. The video, which resurfaced Tuesday after being filmed in August 2014, has already been viewed 22,665 times.
- Even a ‘pizza rat’ costume can be made sexy for Halloween. It’s almost October 31st, which means many fans of the costumed holiday are searching for something provocative to wear. Because it’s Halloween, OK?! Pizza Rat is a costume. Celebrate the brave little rodent who carried a slice of pizza down subway stairs… with a leggy dress and pepperoni pizza pockets!

8am – D Aunt Sues Then-8-Year-Old Nephew for $127,000 Over ‘Unreasonable’ Hug. (NY Magazine) — A Connecticut jury is being asked to render a verdict in the case of an allegedly recklessly joyful 8-year-old over his deployment of “unreasonably forceful” affection toward his aunt (who, of course, lives in Manhattan). In Connecticut’s Superior Court on Friday, a New York woman asked a jury to hold her nephew accountable — to the tune of $127,000 — for the leaping hug that he gave her at his eighth-birthday party. She was knocked to the ground and broke her wrist. On the morning of March 18, 2011, little Sean Tarala of Westport was joyfully riding a new two-wheel bicycle around his house, when he spotted his 54-year-old aunt, Jennifer Connell, arriving for his party, according to the Connecticut Post. The boy then threw the bicycle to the ground and exclaimed, “Auntie Jen, Auntie Jen.” “All of a sudden he was there in the air, I had to catch him and we tumbled onto the ground,” Connell testified. “I remember him shouting, ‘Auntie Jen, I love you,’ and there he was flying at me.” The local paper reports that Tarala, now 12, “appeared confused as he sat with his father, Michael Tarala, in the Main Street courtroom.” The boy’s mother, Lisa Tarala, died last year. Connell testified that she loved her nephew, but that he should be held accountable for her injury, which she claims upended her life.

- O’Malley Polls in 4th Place in His Home State. A Washington Post/University of Maryland survey released on Monday shows O’Malley with just 4 percent support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters in Maryland, which puts him in fourth place behind Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, and Sanders. O’Malley does, however, poll ahead of fellow Democratic hopefuls Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee.
TOMORROW: Sharyl Attkisson, Stuart Varney and the Beltway Boys: Fred Barnes and Mort Kondracke!
