ALEXANDRIA, VA — (WMAL) The Alexandria Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is distributing sandbags to help residents prepare for possible coastal flooding.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 2nd, residents can pick up sandbags with proof of residency at two locations.
One distribution hub is located at the intersection of King and Lee Streets, while the other is an after-hours location, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 133 South Quaker Lane.
Kathleen Leonard, a public information officer with the City of Alexandria said that the 5000 sandbags are only available to Alexandria residents.
“We’re asking residents that are picking up sandbags to show proof of residency with a photo ID or possibly a utility bill,” she said.
Alexandria offers sandbags whenever coastal flooding is imminent, as is the case with current rain conditions and the possibility of Hurricane Joaquin hitting the east coast this weekend.
