WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Today, First Lady Michelle Obama and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan announced the name of Mei Xiang’s panda cub at the National Zoo.

Everyone, meet Bei Bei.

Bei Bei means “precious treasure” in Chinese. Both first ladies decided on his name together.

The male panda cub is one month old and weighs three pounds. His hearing has developed, though his eyes still haven’t opened yet.

A group of schoolchildren sang Chinese songs at the press conference, welcoming the first ladies to the National Zoo and welcoming Bei Bei to the world.

Zoo officials say that Bei Bei and his mother, Mei Xiang are in good health.
