WASHINGTON (WMAL) – It can be compared to Presidential inaugurations, but not even that reflects the full magnitude of Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to Washington, DC, says former Secret Service Agent Dan Bongino.
“It’s similar to conducting multiple Presidential inaugurations in multiple cities, nearly simultaneously,” Bongino said. “I was involved in the initial inauguration of President Obama and I thought that was a massive security operation.”
This Pope’s penchant for low-key security appearances and preference for mingling in crowds and spontaneity adds layers of complications.
“You have a Pope who really likes to get out in the crowd. A lot of people find that endearing about him, but for security, that’s a nightmare,” Bongino said.
“They’re probably going to have to overdo it a bit with assets to overcome the randomness of his behavior. If you would’ve put counter-snipers where he said he was going to get out, you’re going to put them along the whole route, because you just don’t know,” Bongino said. He also mentioned the possibility of more undercover agents to keep an eye on the Pope as he wades through crowds.
As for tips for those hoping to see the Pope at one of his many appearances, Bongino advises to “avoid carrying backpacks if you don’t have to, and always have a plan. Remember where you came in, and always have an exit plan to get out.”
