OCEAN CITY, MD — (WMAL) Labor Day Weekend has always been a busy time for Ocean City’s beaches.

This year, the city is running its boardwalk tram service for an extra week to accommodate the 200,000 people they’re expecting this weekend.

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said that the he isn’t surprised by the early-September surge.

“September’s actually a busier month for us than June,” he explained, “Which is certainly different than it was twenty years ago.”

Ocean City, reliant on beach tourism, is in a vital transition period as many young adults who work as lifeguards or at boardwalk shops are leaving their jobs to attend school.

But Mayor Meehan said he isn’t concerned about the short-staffing along the boardwalk.

“So some of the businesses may be a little shorthanded, but everybody seems to pick it up for the weekend,” he said. “Everything’s open, everybody’s in good spirits.”

The mayor also added that a full staff of lifeguards would be on duty from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. all weekend long.

“The weather forecast for Labor Day Weekend looks great, so we’re looking forward to a busy weekend.”
