WASHINGTON – (WMAL) A new survey indicates the Washington, D.C. area is among the worst places in the country to retire.

Wallethub.com cites economic and quality-of-life factors, including cost of living, activities, traffic congestion, and health care access in their survey. DC ranks 138th out of the 150 cities on the list.

“From a quality-of-l;life point of view, of course we know traffic, commuting, just getting from Point A to Point B is extraordinarily difficult,” said Retirement Protection Solutions President Larry Spoth.

“When I talk to my retirees, a lot of them are planning on moving to anther state where life is slowed down and the cost-of-living is less.”

He said while the hustle-and-bustle of a growing downtown and urban environment may be exciting to young people, most older people find it to be overwhelming.

“I think most people are getting out of that downtown, urban area where life is so hectic and so expensive,” he said.

“Housing, general cost of living, grocery shopping, all those kinds of things are, I would probably say, on the very high end.”

He said his clients are miving to places like North Carolina and Delaware.

On Wallethub.com’s list, fur of the top 10 cities are in Florida, with Tampa topping the list, followed in the top five by Scottsdale, Ariz.; Boise, Idaho; Cape Coral, Fla.; and Orlando.

Newark, NJ ranked as the worst place in the country to retire.
