NEWARK, NJ — (WMAL) The 2015 football season hasn’t started, but the Jets are already turning to their backup quarterback.

Jets’ starter Geno Smith was attending training camp in New Jersey when he was sucker-punched by a teammate on Tuesday.

Linebacker Ikemefuna “I.K.” Enemkpali got into a fight with Smith and broke Smith’s jaw.

Enemkpali was subsequently released from the team.

The fight in the Meadowlands is minor compared to last week’s brawl between the Washington Redskins and Houston Texans, but just one punch can have a lasting impact.

Smith is expected to be out for 6-10 weeks in one of the most bizzare pre-season incidents in 2015.

The Redskins are expected to play the Jets on October 18th, but Smith might not take the field.
