The DC council is back from its summer recess and Councilmember Brooke Pinto has introduced a series of bills aimed at reducing violence and protecting victims of domestic violence.

The “Secure DC Plan” is designed to address “gaps” in criminal laws in the District.

“The bill contains a number of provisions aimed at strengthening protections for victims, or potential victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, senior citizens and children,” Pinto said in a meeting.

Some proposals include making strangulation a standalone crime, as it is in 49 states, and establishing new felony offenses for criminals.

Councilmember Pinto, also the Chairwoman of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, also introduced the current Emergency Crime Bill which was passed over the summer. That crime bill will expire around mid-October.
