Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in using underinflated footballs during the AFC Championship Game was upheld Tuesday by commissioner Roger Goodell. In announcing the decision, Goodell cited new evidence that emerged: On or shortly before March 6 — the day Brady was interviewed by Ted Wells and his investigative team — Brady instructed his assistant to destroy the cellphone he had been using since early November 2014, a period that included the AFC title game against the Colts and the initial weeks of the subsequent investigation. The NFL said in Tuesday’s statement that Brady destroyed the phone even though he was aware that investigators had requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on the phone.

6am – D         Why Mormons are so devastated by the Boy Scout vote on gay leaders. Top Mormons Could Meet Soon About Leaving Scouts. In August, the most senior leaders of the Mormon Church are expected to meet and discuss a decision with profound consequences: whether to end a 100-year relationship with the Boy Scouts of America that has helped shape both institutions. This is not what the Boy Scouts hoped would happen on Monday when they officially lifted their ban on gay adult leaders but said conservative religious sponsors of local packs and troops could pick leaders who shared their beliefs, even if that meant limiting these voluntary positions to heterosexual men. In adopting the new policy, the Scouts’ national board hoped to quell the growing turmoil over its position on gay leaders. But a day later, the Scouts were still torn by the issue, largely because the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which alone sponsors units involving one in five scouting participants, said it might leave the Boy Scouts altogether.

6am – E         Public University’s Bias-Free Language Guide Calls The Word ‘American’ ‘PROBLEMATIC.’ The University of New Hampshire has issued a Bias-Free Language Guide which identifies the word “American” as a “problematic” term which should not be used. Other “problematic” words on the taxpayer-funded school’s lengthy list include “mothering,” “fathering,” “healthy,” “homosexual,” “rich,” “poor” and “senior citizen,” notes Campus Reform. The goal of the politically-correct UNH Bias-Free Language Guide is “to invite inclusive excellence” on the public campus. The guide’s broad and extensive, 4,812-word attempt to police language includes an introductory quote by Melissa Harris-Perry and covers virtually every nook and cranny of radical leftist identity politics imaginable. The word “American” is “problematic,” according to the University of New Hampshire, because it “assumes the U.S. is the only country inside” land masses — North America, South America and Central America — with the word “America” in their names. The UNH language guide decrees that language users should say “U.S. citizen” or “resident of the U.S.” instead.

• Proposed changes to Virginia voter registration stirs fears among GOP. People registering to vote in Virginia would no longer be required to check boxes to indicate whether they are U.S. citizens or felons whose right to vote has not been restored under changes being considered by the Virginia Board of Elections.
• New California: Mass Immigration Turning Virginia Blue. A census study entitled “Immigrants in Virginia,” released by University of Virginia (UVA) researchers, documented the phenomenon: “Until 1970, only 1 in 100 Virginians was born outside of the United States; by 2012, 1 in every 9 Virginians is foreign-born.”

7am – B        Fox lowers threshold for early debate. The change serves to guarantee the presence of candidates such as Lindsey Graham and Carly Fiorina. (Politico) —

Fox News is opening its 5 p.m. debate to all the announced Republican candidates who fail to make the cut for the Aug. 6 prime-time event, removing a requirement that participants reach at least 1 percent in polling. The change amounts to an insurance policy for candidates who were in danger of being disqualified from the vital first debate based on low polls – Carly Fiorina, former New York Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). The announcement by Michael Clemente, Fox News Executive Vice President, News, means that all 16 announced candidates will qualify for Cleveland — either the 5 p.m. undercard, or the 9 p.m. main event. The 9 p.m. debate will include the 10 candidates with the highest average in national polls, as determined by Fox News. The 5 p.m. forum will now include all the rest.

7am – C        Wandering Deer Gets Onto Stage of Northern Virginia Theater. (NBC Washington) — It looks like one of Bambi’s pals is trying to rise to stardom in the local theater scene. A male deer made its way all the way to the stage of Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday. A theater publicist said the deer apparently got access to the building by jumping onto the loading dock. It then wandered through the back hallway and onto the stage where employees were working on the set for the theater’s upcoming production, “The Fix.” “It’s a White House-looking set,” James Gardiner, a publicist for Signature Theatre, told NBC Washington. The employees quickly spotted the deer and ran out of the theater in a panic, closing the door behind them and locking the deer inside.

• Florida Man Arrested In ISIS-Inspired Plot to Bomb Florida Beach, Officials Say> (ABC News) —       The FBI has arrested a man who allegedly wanted to detonate a bomb at a Florida beach and attack police at their homes in what authorities describe as an ISIS-inspired terror attack, officials said. Harlem Suarez, 23, of Key West, Florida, has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in the United States. “Stopping attacks on our homeland by those inspired or directed by designated foreign terrorist organizations is the highest priority,” the head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, John Carlin, said in a statement. Suarez first came onto the FBI’s radar in April, after he posted “extremist rhetoric” and pro-ISIS messages on Facebook, according to the Justice Department. The FBI then sent in a “confidential source,” who for months allegedly talked with Suarez online and in person about plans to attack the United States.
• Kerry Defends Iran Deal in Heated Hearing Before GOP Lawmakers. Secretary of State John Kerry and other members of the Obama administration defended the Iran nuclear agreement in a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday. “If we walk away, we walk away alone,” said Kerry, warning that if the deal collapsed it would hurt U.S. interest and allies. Obama administration officials deflected a barrage of critiques. Some questions focused on the details of the agreement, but several lengthier ones argued against negotiating with Iran at all, and even turned toward accusations about the administration’s commitment to protecting national security. Republican lawmakers expressed fear that the proposal yielded too much ground to a regime that has destabilized the Middle East. “You can’t do a good deal with a bad guy,” said David Trott, a Republican representative from Michigan.

• Gay and Transgender Catholics Urge Pope Francis to Take a Stand. Lui Akira Francesco Matsuo said he was standing in line for communion one Sunday at his Roman Catholic church in Detroit when a fellow parishioner pulled him aside: Didn’t he know that the archbishop had just urged supporters of same-sex marriage not to take communion?       Mr. Matsuo, who is transgender, left and never returned to his parish. Now, two years later, he is among a large group of gay and transgender Catholics who are seeking a meeting with Pope Francis during his first visit to the United States, in September, pushing him to take a stand on the issues of sexuality and gender that are increasingly dividing Catholics. “I want him to extend his hand openly, especially to the transgender community,” said Mr. Matsuo, who is 28 and said he has identified as male ever since he was a toddler. “I am a practicing Catholic. I just don’t have a parish I can call home.”
• What it means to ‘sound gay’ (Washington Post) — Most of us are familiar with the stereotype of a “gay voice.” A man speaks at a higher pitch, and in a more melodious fashion. The man might pronounce his p’s, t’s and k’s very crisply, or have what’s sometimes (incorrectly) described as a “lisp.” Think Nathan Lane in The Birdcage, or Buddy Cole of Kids in the Hall . But is there any reality to this stereotype? Do gay men actually sound different than straight men? And if so, why? These are the questions in a new documentary, “Do I Sound Gay?” It’s a fascinating and nuanced film, in which the filmmaker, David Thorpe, uses his feelings about his voice to look at attitudes toward homosexuality. It raises a complicated discussion about gay pride, lingering homophobia, disguised misogyny, and the extent to which we all alter the image that we present to the world. As the film begins, Thorpe is disturbed because he realizes he doesn’t like his voice any more. He’s just gone through a break-up and is feeling unconfident and low. “Who could respect, much less fall in love with, an old braying ninny like me?” he asks.

• Jon Stewart Secretly Met With Obama at White House Jon Stewart Secretly Met With Obama at White House. (NY Times) — WASHINGTON — President Obama has submitted himself for a grilling on the set of “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart three times. But on at least two occasions, Mr. Obama also secretly met with the comedian on his own imposing turf. In 2011 and again in 2014, Mr. Stewart came to Washington for coffee with the president, entering the White House grounds at the entrance where the public tours begin. He shook hands with several tourists and was escorted to the Oval Office for his one-on-one sit down with the commander in chief. He joked in 2011 to his escort that he felt like he was being called to the principal’s office. The two meetings — recorded in the official White House visitor log — were first noted this week by Politico. Current and former White House officials confirmed the visits, describing them as efforts by the president and his communications team to tap into Mr. Stewart’s influence with younger voters.

8am – B/C     John Boehner coup: Mark Meadows files motion to oust House Speaker. (The Washington Times) — Tea party champion Rep. Mark Meadows filed a motion Tuesday to oust House Speaker John A. Boehner from his leadership post, escalating the feud between a faction of conservative lawmakers and the Republican leadership. Mr. Meadows, North Carolina Republican, filed a motion to “vacate the chair,” which could force a no-confidence vote by the full chamber and result in the removal of Mr. Boehner as speaker. In the resolution, Mr. Meadows says Mr. Boehner, Ohio Republican, “has endeavored to consolidate power and centralize decision-making, bypassing the majority of the 435 Members of Congress and the people they represent.” He accused the speaker of limiting debate, pushing legislation to the brink to compel votes in a state of crisis, and moving to “punish Members who vote according to their conscience” instead of how he wants. The Meadows resolution says Mr. Boehner has caused the Congress to “atrophy,” making it “subservient” to the executive and judicial branches.
