Governor Youngkin Celebrates Ryan Zimmerman Day

By WMAL.com

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issues a proclamation on Friday celebrating one of the state most beloved athletes Ryan Zimmerman. Zimmerman, who was the first draft pick selected by the Nationals in their inaugural season in Washington, DC in 2005, played high school baseball in Virginia Beach, attended and in college at the University of Virginia before becoming a local star in the MLB.

“The Commonwealth’s own Ryan Zimmerman is a baseball legend and trailblazer. I am thrilled to issue a proclamation designating Ryan Zimmerman Day in Virginia to commemorate his service to his community, UVA, Virginia and his skill and dedication to baseball. Congratulations Mr. National,” said Governor Youngkin.

Ryan Zimmerman was named to the All-ACC First Team in 2004, the All-ACC Second Team in 2005, and he started all 174 games that he played for the Wahoos; and, in recognition of his many achievements, Zimmerman was inducted into the University of Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018. Professionally, he played his entire 16-season career with the team, which included winning a Gold Glove, appearing in two All-Star games, and hitting the first home run in Nationals World Series history on his way to helping the Nationals earn their first World Series title in 2019
