The democrat-controlled General Assembly in Maryland overrode a veto from republican Governor Larry Hogan over the weekend to expand abortion access statewide. In a partisan vote, the House voted 29 to 15 and the Senate 90 to 46 in favor of bypassing the governor’s veto power.
The Abortion Care Access Act initially vetoed by Hogan will allow medical providers, such as nurse practitioners, to perform abortions in Maryland. The bill also allocates $3.5 million to fund the training of providers to carry out abortion procedures.
In a letter responding to the initial passage of the abortion access bill, Hogan said, “House Bill 937 endangers the health and lives of women by allowing non-physicians to perform abortions. The bill risks lowering the high standard of reproductive health care services received by women in Maryland. These procedures are complex and can, and often do, result in significant medical complications that require the attention of a licensed physician.” The letter continued, “The only impact that this bill would have on women’s reproductive rights would be to set back standards from women’s health care and safety.”
The legislation will go into effect on July 1, 2022.
