The American people’s trust in big tech companies has continued to falter, while the rest of the world has gained more trust in the tech platforms, according to data from Edelman’s annual 2022 Trust Barometer that was first shared with Axios. Big Tech has become a target of conservative lawmakers, who claim the liberal back tech companies’ posses inherent political bias and are hellbent on censoring conservative voices online.
The report:
- 54 percent: the number of Americans who trust tech companies. This number is down an astonishing 19 points since 2019.
- Two-thirds: the number of democrats who trust big tech companies. Only 49 and 50 percent of republicans and independents respectively believe that tech companies could be trusted.
- 74 percent: the number of people worldwide in the business sector who trust big tech. On the opposite end of the spectrum lies social media, which currently falls dead last as the least trusted with only 44 percent of respondents believing it can be trusted.
