Republicans Warn of Incoming Border Surge, Predict 18,000 Migrant Crossings Per Day

Following the Biden Administration’s decision to let the Trump-era Title 42 expire, House Republicans are warning the American public to expect a drastic rise in migrants crossing into the United States at the southern border.

  • Title 42: a federal health order enacted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that bars people from entering the United States for public health reasons during the pandemic. It allows for border patrol officials to send illegal immigrants back to their native country immediately upon apprehension.
  • May 23: the date that Title 42 expires and republican lawmakers in Washington expect so see a surge of illegals immigrants entering the country.
  • What McCarthy is saying: “I’m here to tell you, unfortunately, our fears were confirmed more so than we even thought,” said the House Minority Leader at a press conference on Monday. He continued “That’s all going away in about six weeks … It’s going to only ask for more to come. We are already seeing mayhem down along the border.
  • Border patrol is bracing for what could be a chaotic seen at the border. Migrants seeking entry into the United States have been flocking to the border in anticipation of the end of Title 42. The Biden Administration has been working closely with state and local agencies to provide the infrastructure and manpower to best manage the expected surge.
  • Lawsuits coming: Arizona, Louisiana and Missouri have already filed lawsuits against the Biden Administration to challenge the decision to allow Title 42 to expire.
