Elon Musk Mulls Creating New “Free Speech” Social Media Platform

By WMAL.com

Tesla founder Elon Musk made the rounds on Twitter over the weekend, questioning whether a new social media platform was needed to compete with the current industry giants.

  • What he said: “Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” musk tweeted out in a Twitter poll. The poll came back with 70.4% of respondents claiming “no” Twitter does not adhere to these principles. The poll received more than 2 million votes.
  • His response: “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” He continued, “Is a new platform needed?”
  • Comments poured in supporting Musk’s call for a new social media platform, with many encouraging the outspoken tech CEO to start his own platform. While many others have attempted to create rivals to Facebook and Twitter, no alternative platform has come close to the scale and scope of the two social media giants. Musk would have the resources and connections to create a true competitor in the marketplace.
