Governor Youngkin has urged state legislators in Richmond to suspend Virginia’s gas tax in wake of the soring gas prices over the past month. Gas prices have reached nearly $4 per gallon in the Commonwealth following a .56 cent increase last week.
- What he’s saying: “We have constrained the development of American energy; it has made matters even worse. But we can eliminate unnecessary taxes that have been added on top of already increasing prices,” said Youngkin at a speech to the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce.
- House of Delegates: which is currently controlled by a Republican majority passed a budget proposal that includes Youngkin’s request.
- State Senate: which is currently controlled by a Democrat majority killed the gas tax cut in committee, passing a budget that excluded the governor’s request.
- What’s next: the House and Senate will enter into a joint conference to negotiate the discrepancies between their two budget proposals. The elimination of the state gas tax is expected to be a key point of the negotiation.
