Virginia Aims to Lure Washington Commanders with Big Tax Incentives

Members of the Virginia State Legislature are moving forward with a measure intended to lure the Washington Commanders out of Maryland to build their new stadium.

  • $1 billion: the amount the measure would allow the Commanders to forgo in future tax payments to help finance the new stadium.
  • Sports betting: is also expected to play a major role in Virginia’s attempt to secure the team’s relocation.
  • Virginia Football Stadium Authority: would be created if the legislation is passed. The Authority would be tasked with financing the new stadium.
  • 1997: the year that the then-Washington Redskins took the field in Landover, MD at Fedex Field for the first time.
  • 2027: the year that Fedex Field’s lease expires.
