The National Guard Bureau issued a press release on Wednesday announcing the activation of 700 troops in response to potential protests by the Freedom Convoy. The Freedom Convoy, which is reported to be en route to Washington, D.C., is protesting government overreach in the form of vaccine and mask mandates.
- The protest is set to coincide with President Biden’s State of the Union Address on March 1.
- The Defense Department is set to deploy 700 National Guard members and 50 large tactical vehicles to the Capitol.
- The guard members will be assigned to provide command and control to support specified traffic points around the Beltway.
- The guard members will not be armed or have the authority to conduct domestic surveillance activities, according to the release.
