GERMANTOWN, Md. (AP) — One of four people shot during a fight at a Maryland recreation center basketball court has died and a teen has been charged with murder, police said.
Montgomery County police officers responded to a report of a shooting Wednesday night at the court outside the Plum Gar Community Recreation Center in Germantown and found three victims on the basketball court and a fourth victim nearby, police said in a news release Thursday.
The three juveniles and one adult were taken to area hospitals. The adult, identified as Axel Trejos, 20, was later pronounced dead, police said. Police didn’t immediately release further details about the other victims or their conditions.
Police set up a perimeter and found two boys, who were taken into custody. Police charged a 14-year-old boy as an adult with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles charged with crimes. The other boy wasn’t charged.
News outlets reported that police spokeswoman Shiera Goff said Wednesday night that several people were playing basketball when there was a dispute and shots were fired. Goff called the shooting an isolated incident, saying there was no risk to the community and investigators weren’t searching for more suspects.
