Trump says mineral deal with Ukraine to be signed next week

Mallory Wilson | April 18

(The Washington Times) — President Trump said a mineral deal with Ukraine will be signed next Thursday, a deal the president has been chasing for months.

Seated beside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the Oval Office on Thursday, Mr. Trump said, “I assume they’re going to live up to the deal.”

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it’s possible to sign a “memorandum of intent” as soon as Thursday.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said “we’re still working out the details.”

Mr. Trump has been pushing for this mineral deal as he continues to work to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. U.S. officials have repeatedly met with officials from both countries to get this war settled.

The president has said access to Ukraine’s minerals could serve as a form of payment for all of the aid money that was sent to Ukraine under the Biden administration.
