White House physician says Trump is in ‘excellent health’

(The Washington Times) — President Trump is in “excellent health,” according to a memo issued Sunday by the White House.

He had his first examination of his second term Friday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Mr. Trump, 78, in January became the oldest president to be sworn in for a second term.

“President Trump remains in excellent health, exhibiting robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function,” White House physician Sean Barbabella wrote in the memo. “His active lifestyle continues to contribute significantly to his well-being.”

“President Trump’s days include participation in multiple meetings, public appearances, press availability, and frequent victories in golf events,” the memo said. “President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

The memo said the president took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a test to detect any cognitive impairments, and scored a 30 out of 30.

The president bragged to reporters on Friday that he took the test, saying, “I don’t know what to tell you other than I got every answer right.”

He took tests screening for depression and anxiety, and his physician noted his answers were “within the normal range for both.”

The memo said Mr. Trump’s heart function is “normal,” along with his eyesight, lungs, thyroid and lymph nodes. He weighs 224 pounds and is 75 inches tall and his joints and muscles “have a full range of motion.”

His cholesterol levels are in the “optimal” range.

The memo shared that the president had a colonoscopy in July that found diverticulitis and a benign polyp that was removed.

The memo also noted that Mr. Trump has scarring on his right ear from a gunshot wound after an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

Mr. Trump has long been guarded about his medical information.

He had his last known full exam in September 2023, and a letter shared on Truth Social by Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald said he had been Mr. Trump’s physician since 2021 and that he’s received “several comprehensive examinations.”

Dr. Aronwald called Mr. Trump’s health “excellent.”

“His physical exams were well within normal range and his cognitive exams were exceptional,” the letter said. “In addition, his most recent extensive laboratory analysis remains well within normal limits and was even more favorable than prior testing in some of the most significant parameters, most likely secondary to weight reduction.”

He did get checked out after the assassination attempt against him at the Butler rally by Rep. Ronny Jackson, Texas Republican who was Mr. Trump’s physician during his first term.

The last physical report released on Mr. Trump while president was in June 2020, where Dr. Sean Conley said “there has been no interval change to the President’s medical history” and his weight was 244.

He had an unscheduled stop at Walter Reed in 2019 that left people wondering if something happened to the president, but years later it came out that it appeared to just have been for a routine colonoscopy.

When he first ran in 2015, his personal doctor at the time, Dr. Harold Bornstein, wrote a letter saying he would be the “healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.”

He revealed in 2018 that Mr. Trump “dictated that whole letter.”

“I just made it up as I went along,” he told CNN.

His first physical done in 2018 by Mr. Jackson also gave a rave review of his health.

People wondered if the administration would be transparent with the exam this go around. When asked if they are committed to releasing as many results as possible from the exam, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the briefing Friday “Of course.”

The physical and mental health of presidents is always taken seriously, and presidents go to the same hospital throughout their administration.

There has been a specific emphasis on health and cognitive ability since Mr. Trump and former President Joseph R. Biden were the country’s two oldest presidents.

Attention on these tests is heightened as the country felt lied to about Mr. Biden’s physical and mental health.

Mr. Biden’s last visit to Walter Reed in February 2024 came back with glowing reviews — calling him “healthy,” “fit” and able to complete his duties as president.

The examination didn’t test his mental facilities, even though lawmakers had demanded a cognitive test after a report from special counsel Robert Hur that looked into classified documents at Mr. Biden’s house raised questions about Mr. Biden’s mental abilities.

The report described Mr. Biden as a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory.”

Former White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre told reporters at the time that Mr. Biden didn’t “need a cognitive test” based on assessments from the president’s doctors, including his neurologist.

However, the country couldn’t miss Mr. Biden’s aging physique, falls, robotic slow movements and frequent tripping over words.

He declined to take a neurological and cognitive test in July while campaigning for a second term against Mr. Trump. After his shockingly poor performance at the June presidential debate between him and Mr. Trump, he told NPR that he has “a cognitive test every single day” and maintained he was the best person to beat Mr. Trump in the election.

He dropped out of the race later that month.

Mr. Trump put special emphasis on cognitive tests for presidents during the campaign. He said in August he would be open to releasing his medical records and at an October 2024 rally, he said “We should have cognitive tests for anybody that runs for President and Vice President.”

Ahead of the election, he claimed he was healthier than former Vice President Kamala Harris, the then-Democratic presidential candidate after Mr. Biden dropped out after she released her medical records that showed she suffered from allergies and hives.

“These are deeply serious conditions that clearly impact her functioning. Maybe that is why she can’t answer even the simplest of questions asked by 60 Minutes, and others. What is this all about? I don’t have these problems,” Mr. Trump wrote.

Ms. Harris slammed Mr. Trump after he said in August he would release his medical records but never did.

He’s had a few missteps of his own that had people raising eyebrows, like stumbling as he got into a garbage truck with his name on it before a rally in October. He has also had moments of mixing things up in his speeches.
