Two children were struck and killed by a vehicle as they were walking to their elementary school in Riverdale Park, Md. Monday morning.
The two children, Sky Sosa, 5, and Shalom Mbah, 10, were walking in the crosswalk accompanied by one of the children’s adult male relative when a passenger van took a left turn and struck the three pedestrians. The adult male was not seriously injured. The two children were sent to the hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries.
“Whether [the left hand turn] was a stop or a rolling stop, we’re still putting that together at this time,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said in a Tuesday news conference.
Chief Aziz revealed that the crossing guard at that particular intersection retired and there was no crossing guard at the incident.
“Video has come forward and we are reviewing that information right now,” Aziz said in the news conference. “There were witnesses that were there on scene and there are things that we will put together to make sure that is actually the facts of what happened.”
The incident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed against the female driver.
“This is early,” Aziz added.
