You might see cars with no drivers on the 395 express lanes this week.
Transurban and other Virginia roadway partners are testing autonomous vehicles. These cars are “self-driving” and do not require a human at the wheel. These cars are called Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV).
This experiment is all part of Transurban’s goal of advancing technology.
“Autonomous vehicles are coming,” Jacqueline Woodbridge, Communications Manager with Transurban told WMAL News. “We don’t know how fast or when but driving is becoming more and more autonomous as technology advances.”
Transurban says driverless cars and Express Lanes are a natural fit because both are “smart technology.”
The tests will be running for the rest of the week but soon these vehicles won’t be a test anymore.
