Child sex abuse lawsuit filed against Archdiocese of Washington

Julia Eisen – WMAL News | October 3, 2023

The Archdiocese of Washington is facing a class action lawsuit, now that a new Maryland law has eliminated statutes of limitations on civil claims.

By lifting the statute of limitation, sexual abuse victims can come forward years after an incident occurred. Three anonymous victims say they have suffered physical, emotional and financial harm as a result of child sexual abuse.

Attorney Jonathan Schochor is representing the three victims.

“They will be vindicated and hopefully, they will be compensated,” Schochor told 7News.

The Archdiocese released a statement in anticipation of the lawsuits at the end of September. WMAL News reached out to the Archdiocese asking for comment.

“We became aware of a lawsuit filed on behalf of three plaintiffs. We do not comment on pending litigation,” the communications team responded.

However, Schochor believes this litigation will help others down the line.

“We’re trying to protect the abused victims, and we’re going to protect future generations,” Schochor said.

The Archdiocese has renewed the pledge to provide a safe environment for all, including extensive training and zero-tolerance policy of abuse.
