Elon Musk is continuing his crusade to liberate free speech online with the surprising announcement on Tuesday that he was prepared to reverse Twitter’s ban on former President Donald J. Trump. The announcement was met with harsh criticism from the left, who believe that Trump, and many of his supporters, should be censored across online platforms.
“It was not correct to ban Donald Trump,” Musk said in an interview with the Financial Times. “I think that was a mistake, because it alienated a large part of the country and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice.” Musk continued, saying the ban “”was morally wrong and flat out stupid.”
Trump, who has been banned from the platform since January of 2021, said he would not be returning to the platform he once frequented. Despite Musk’s plans to reverse the ban, Trump has declared he intends to stick with his newly launched social media platform – Truth Social.
When asked about Truth Social, Musk responded, “He’s now going to be on Truth Social, as will a large part of the right in the United States. So, I think this could end up being, frankly, worse than having a single forum where everyone can debate,” he added.
