After the ousting of former Democrat minority leader Eileen Filler-Corn, in-fighting amongst Virginia democrats has intensified. Del. Don L. Scott Jr. (D-Portsmouth) led the charge last Wednesday on the removal efforts of Filler-Corn and now seeks to replace her as the new party leader in the state house.
While Del. Scott was initially thought to be the frontrunner to replace the minority leader his initial attempt to hold a vote to appoint Filler-Corn’s replacement directly after her removal was denied. It now appears new challengers for the post have begun to surface. Former Filler-Corn allies and members of House leadership Del. Marcus Simon (Fairfax) and Del. Richard C. “Rip” Sullivan Jr. (Fairfax) are considering bids for the vacant position. Filler-Corn could also potentially seek to regain her post when the vote is held.
“It is deeply disappointing that some have now chosen internal fighting instead of focusing on the real threats we are facing. As a woman in politics, these are the punches we are forced to roll with,” said Filler-Corn following her removal as minority leader.
The in-fighting amongst Virginia Democrats follows an election where the office of governor, lt. governor, and attorney general all flipped red. Democrats struggled to create a cohesive message that resonated with voters in the Commonwealth. While newly-elected Governor Glenn Youngkin spent time on the campaign trail talking with voters about the issues that matter in the state of Virginia, democrats continued, and failed, to tie Youngkin to former President Donald J. Trump.
The struggle to decide the next leader of House Democrats in Richmond could have a devastating impact on Democrats, as the vote to appoint a new party leader is expected to create a large divide amongst members of the party.
