CNN+ Executives Projected Platform Would Generate More Revenue Than Cable Channel

By WMAL.com

In a CNN+ pitch deck recently acquired by Axios, CNN+ executives believed the new streaming platform would outpace the company’s cable channel in the span of ten years. The pitch deck released shows the clear delusion of CNN executives, who were forced to shutter the doors on CNN+ less than a month after launching the subscription service.

Warner Bros. Discovery pulled the plug on the project after the platform failed to generate anywhere near the anticipated number of daily subscribers. Based on internal research, CNN+ executives believed the now failed platform could one day generate upwards of 30 million subscribers globally. They fall a tad short of their projections, enrolling a measly 150,000 subscribers and reporting only 10,000 active daily users.

According to the pitch deck, CNN+ had categorized its potential viewers into three categories and assigned, what the projected to be, the number of viewers that fell into each category. First, the “CNN super fans”, which they believed accounted for 29 million potential viewers. Second, “news and non-fiction SVOD (subscription video on demand) fans”, which accounted for 24 million potential viewers. And lastly, “global news consumers”, which accounted for 36 million potential viewers.
