House Republicans Lay Groundwork to Impeach Secretary of Homeland Security

By WMAL.com

On Monday, 133 House Republicans joined forces to send a letter to the office of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas laying the groundwork to call for his impeachment. The effort was led by Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), Chairman of the Border Security Caucus, and his co-chair Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX). Other notable signees include Minority Leader McCarthy, Minority Whip Steve Scalise and Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik.

“We write to address your actions to dismantle the security of our nation’s southern border and disregard for the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws. Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens and undermine the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty. Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raises grave questions about your suitability for office.”

The Republican Study Committee, which represents more than 150 conservative members of Congress, is believe to be using this letter as stepping stone to call for the impeachment of Mayorkas. It is believed that Minority Leader McCarthy is whipping support for this action before formally calling for the impeachment. McCarthy’s frustration with HSS Secretary to adequately secure American borders has increased in recent month, saying, “if someone is derelict in their job, there is always the option of impeaching somebody. But right now, he’s got 30 days.”

Calls for the impeachment of Biden cabinet members and the president himself are expected to become louder if the GOP retakes the majority in the House this Fall. What was once a fringe concept floated by the wings of the Republican caucus has now become mainstream amongst conservatives in Congress.
