The Office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced this week that they would be launching an investigation into accusations that the Washington Commanders had committed financial improprieties.
The accusation under investigation by Miyares were first filed by a team employee, who claimed that the Commanders knowingly withheld security deposit refunds from fans and committed several other violations of financial misconduct. The investigation was sparked by a letter sent from the House Oversight and Reform Committee detailing the claims laid out by the employee. The letter was sent to both Miyares’ Office as well as the Federal Trade Commission.
“The Office of the Attorney General of Virginia is conducting an official inquiry into this matter,” Miyares wrote. “To be clear, I have not prejudged the issues raised regarding the Commanders. However, I view it as my responsibility to carefully examine the material facts regarding this matter after it was brought to my attention.
Earlier this month The Commanders released a statement regarding the accusations, “The team categorically denies any suggestion of financial impropriety of any kind at any time,” the team said in a statement. “We adhere to strict internal processes that are consistent with industry and accounting standards, are audited annually by a globally respected independent auditing firm, and are also subject to regular audits by the NFL. We continue to cooperate fully with the Committee’s work.”
The investigation marks yet another scandal in what has been a difficult year for the Washington Commanders.
