Once a band of four ultra-progressive liberal activists turned Members of Congress is now expected to grow their influence over Democrat leadership in the House of Representatives following the midterms elections this Fall. While Democrats are expected to lose seats and the majority in the House the role of the liberal wing of the party is expected to grow.
The rise in progressive candidates filing for higher office has increased, and it is anticipated that as many as six self-described progressives have realistic chances of winning House seats this fall. This would grow the rising progressive caucus forming in the House and increase the amount of pressure put on Democratic leadership to make their liberal policy proposals a centerpiece of the Democrat’s larger policy agenda.
“In 10 years, a lot more of Congress is going to look like the Squad,” said Karthik Ganapathy of Left Flank Strategies, a political consultancy supporting left-wing candidates, in a recent interview with Axios. “This is where our politics is headed. Not just as Democrats — as a country.”
The Squad, which began as small vocal minority in the House, has made gains in both numbers and influences over the past few years. It is clear that their efforts to move the Democrat party as far to the left as possible has been working, as policies like the Green New Deal are now central to what Democrats are trying to sell to voters on the campaign trail.
