The Biden Administration is reportedly reconsidering its decision to bring an end to the Trump-era Title 42 on May 23, which is expected to cause an unprecedented surge of illegal immigration into the U.S. at the southern border.
Swing state and border state democrats have been pressuring the Biden Administration to consider alternative solutions to repealing the title. If Title 42 is repealed it will likely result in a massive influx of illegal immigrants entering the country amidst already historic numbers at the border. A massive surge in immigration could be the nail in the coffin for vulnerable congressional democrats who are up for election this Fall.
Republicans have voiced outrage of the Administration’s decision. “You would think there would be some concern about the politics of this,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). “I think this is a disaster for the administration and for Democrats generally.”
The clock is ticking for the Biden Administration to make a decision regarding the potential delay of the title’s expiration date. Estimates currently project up to 170,000 illegal immigrants entering the U.S. following Title 42’s expiration, according to a report published by Axios.
