Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited President Biden to visit his war-torn homeland in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday. In an interview last month while traveling to Poland, President Biden informed reported that he may interested in visiting Ukraine sometime in the future.
When asked if Zelensky believed Biden may visit Ukraine, he responded, “I think he will … But it’s his decision, of course. And about the safety situation, it depends; I mean that … But I think … he’s the leader of United States and that’s why he should come here to see.”
The prospect of Biden visiting Ukraine appears unlikely at this time. While UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the country last week, Biden’s issues abroad and physical stamina would likely keep him from making the trip. Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed this claim earlier in the week in an interview the “Pod Save America” podcast, saying, he’s ready to go to Ukraine, (but) we are not sending the president to Ukraine.”
Zelensky’s invite comes amidst growing pressure from Americans for the Biden Administration to do more in aiding Ukraine’s war effort against the Russian invasion. While America pledged $800 million in military assistance last month the calls have only become larger as the body count in Ukraine continues to rise.
