A Rasmussen Reports poll released on Thursday shows former President Donald J. Trump maintaining a strong hold on the Republican base. While many have speculated that the meteoric rise in popularity experienced by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could catapult him into contention for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, those survey believe Trump is still the odd-on favor to win the party’s nomination.
The poll found that 40% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Trump would win if both he and DeSantis sought the 2024 Republican nomination. Twenty-two percent (22%) think DeSantis would win, while 23% believe neither Trump nor DeSantis would win the 2024 nomination. Another 15% are not sure.
Digging deeper into the number, the survey found that amongst those picking Trump as the favorite to be the nominee 59 percent were Republicans, 37 percent were unaffiliated and 24 percent were Democrats. While those who picked Gov. DeSantis, only 23 percent were Republicans, 21 percent were unaffiliated, and 20 percent were Democrats.
The Rasmussen Reports poll released Thursday surveyed 1,000 likely U.S. voters April 10-11 and the results had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
