Youngkin Pushes for Early School Board Elections in Loudoun County

By WMAL.com

On Monday, Governor Glenn Youngkin amended legislation that would force the Loudoun County School Board elections to take place a year earlier than previously scheduled. The amendment came as part of a busy day for the governor, as he signed into law more than 700 pieces of legislation and vetoed 25 and amended an additional 114 bills. In total the General Assembly sent 841 total bills to his desk.

The amendment added by Youngkin would force all nine members of the Loudoun County School Board onto the ballot in the Fall of 2023. School Board members have historically had staggered terms, so the entire board isn’t up for election in a single year. The amendment still requires the approval of what has been a divided General Assembly.

The move follows promises made on the campaign trail by Youngkin to reign in the powers of the liberal School Boards who enacted overreaching mask mandates, fought for the implementation of Critical Race Theory into classroom curriculums, pushed gender politics on students, and failed to properly address and notify parents regarding several high-profile cases of sexual assaults. Youngkin began fulfilling campaign promises on day one in office, when he issued an executive order calling for Attorney General Jason Miyares’ office to open an investigation into the county school boards handling of the sexual assault cases.

Youngkin’s office released a statement following the 11:59pm deadline on Monday. “These bills are all bipartisan and we can all be proud that together we’ve taken steps to make life easier for Virginians, make our Commonwealth’s economy more competitive, support law enforcement, protect the most vulnerable among us, increase access to health care, and take necessary steps toward making Virginia’s schools the absolute best in the nation,” his statement said.
