Youngkin Signs Legislation Forcing Schools to Notify Parents of Sexually Explicit Content in Classrooms

By WMAL.com

The Office of Governor Glenn Youngkin announced on Friday that he had signed a bill that will force the state’s Department of Education to develop policies to ensure parents in the Commonwealth are notified when sexually explicit materials are included in a classroom’s curriculum. The legislation introduced by State Senator Siobhan Dunnavant (R-Henrico) also requires local school boards to adopt the policies developed within the Department of Education.

Sen. Dunnavant’s bill, signed by Gov. Youngkin, ensures that schools must notify parents when sexually explicit subjects are integrated into a lesson plan and give parents the opportunity to review the material and offer alternative materials. On the campaign trail, Youngkin criticized Terry McAuliffe for vetoing a similar piece of legislation while he was in office.

Governor Youngkin also signed into law a bill that promotes performance standards in school, which were both included in a massive day for the governor’s office in which he signed more than 100 pieces of legislation into law. In a statement released by his office, Youngkin said, “both deliver on my Day One promises to give parents a greater say in their children’s education. I’m pleased to sign them into law, along with many other bipartisan bills that will enhance education, improve public safety, provide tax relief, and make government work better for the people of Virginia.”
