Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates are once again rejecting a plan proposed by Governor Youngkin to suspend the state’s gas tax during a time when prices at the pump continue to soar. The democratic caucus in the House has proposed rebates of $50 per car or up to $100 per household as an alternative to the governor’s plan.
The democrats announced that they plan to introduce the legislation as an alternative to Youngkin’s plan that would suspend the state’s $.26 per gallon gas tax. The liberal legislators claim their plan costs one-third of Youngkin’s and sends funds directly to drivers in the Commonwealth. “Governor Youngkin’s plan is riddled with holes that will do lasting harm to Virginia and the people who live here,” said chair of the House Democratic Caucus Del. Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria).
Last Monday, Youngkin sent his proposed legislation to the General Assembly to enact the gas tax holiday effective May 1 to July 31. Youngkin’s proposals faces strong opposition in the democrat-controlled State Senate, while the democrats plan will face headwinds in the republican-controlled House of Delegates.
According to recent reports from AAA, Virginia’s average price per gallon is currently set at $4.01 per gallon, up from $2.75 per gallon this time last year.
