Senator Mitt Romney (R) joined colleague Senator Lisa Murkowski on Monday in announcing their support for the confirmation of President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.
- State-of-play: after contentious nomination hearings last week Brown Jackson is expected to be confirmed this week. With Romney and Murkowski joining Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) President Biden’s nominee is expected to have the votes needed to be confirmed as the next Justice on the Supreme Court.
- What Romney said: “After reviewing Judge Jackson’s record and testimony, I have concluded that she is a well-qualified jurist and a person of honor. While I do not expect to agree with every decision she may make on the Court, I believe that she more than meets the standard of excellence and integrity. I congratulate Judge Jackson on her expected confirmation and look forward to her continued service to our nation.” said Romney in a Tweet issued by his office.
- Romney breaks with the party: this is certainly not the first time the Utah Senator has broken with the Republican party on a high-profile vote. Most notably, Romney voted with democrats, twice, to impeach former President Donald J. Trump.
