Independent Women’s Forum Call for Women’s Bill of Rights

By WMAL.com

The Independent Women’s Forum (IWF), along with a number of women’s rights organizations, are calling for the legislative adoption of the Women’s Bill of Rights to provide a legal definition of the word “women”. IWF President Carrie Lukas joined O’Connor & Company on this morning’s show to discuss the proposal and shed light on why it is so critically important to protecting women’s rights.

  • The Women’s Bill of Rights: if adopted, the proposal would provide legal definition of the following words: ‘female’, ‘woman’, and ‘sex’. In addition to defining these terms legally the proposal “would codify the Supreme Court’s intermediate scrutiny standard, which forbids unfair discrimination against similarly-situated males and females but allows the law to recognize sex when relevant,” according to a release issued by IWF.
  • What Carrie said: “as a matter of law it is incredibly important that we do know what we are talking about when we use the word women. We’ve seen this concept of women really getting erased as a matter of law. It is really a matter of societal understanding. Independent Women’s Forum has been talking with women’s advocates on the right and left about the need to create a definition. And that is why we are releasing today … what we are calling the Women’s Bill of Rights to define women and, really, to defend women
  • Organizations involved: Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) joins the Independent Women’s Law Center (IWLC), Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF), Concerned Women of America, Women’s Declaration International, and author Abigail Shrier in calling for legislative adoption of the Women’s Bill of Rights.
  • Press call: is scheduled for today at 3:00 p.m. EST
