Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill, blocking instructions on gender identity and sexual orientation from kindergarten through third grade classrooms statewide.
- What DeSantis is saying: “We will make sure that parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination,” DeSantis said before he signed the bill into law. DeSantis and party leaders have stated from the beginning that the goal of this legislation is to give parents the decision-making power when it comes to conversations and instruction about the gender identity and sexual orientation of their children.
- What the bill says: “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.” Parents would be able to sue districts over violations.
- ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill: the name that democrats and leftist opposition titled the bill to try and win public favor in stopping the governor’s attempts to rid classrooms of gender and sexual orientation conversation. The grossly inaccurate title was used by the mainstream media, Hollywood, and the White House. The latest opponent of the legislation, Disney, has been extremely vocal in their opposition to the bill, setting off a high-profile battle between the media giant and the governor’s office. “[This bill] should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” said Disney in a statement released after Desantis signed the bill into law.
