A group of environmental and progressive organizations introduced a candidate pledge for democrats running in the 2022 midterm elections that includes a request to co-sponsor several bills rooted in the Green New Deal.
- The pledge: candidates who sign the pledge are committing to co-sponsor 10 pieces of new legislation related to the Green New Deal in their first six months in office.
- The policies: among the progressive environmental policies included in the pledge is the Keep it in the Ground Act, which bars new projects to harvest American oil on federal lands.
- Several democrats already fit the criteria for the pledge including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep. IIhan Omar (D-MN), among others.
- Groups backing the pledge: Green Peace, Sunrise Movement (an AOC led group), Our Revolution and Working Families Party.
- State-of-play: the pledge comes at time when gas prices are surging and reliance on foreign oil has never been higher. Americans nationwide have called on the Biden Administration to restart American oil production and secure its energy future.
- Democrats are scrambling for a platform to run on in the 2022 midterm elections. President Biden’s policy agenda has been stalled in a highly divided Senate, and democrats are desperate to find an agenda to run on this Fall.
