The Republican primary challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) is getting a big boost this week as more than 100 House Republicans announce a joint fundraising effort to aide the challenger’s campaign. The fundraiser for Harriet Hageman, who is running to unseat Cheney as Wyoming’s lone Member of Congress, will serve as a unified effort from House Republicans to oust one of their own members from the caucus.
- State-of-play: Cheney has come under fire from Republican colleagues for her role on the special committee investigating Jan 6th. Despite the escalating feud between Cheney and colleagues, she has continued to criticize former President Trump. Cheney has become the face of the small fraction of Republicans who oppose Trump.
- What Minority Leader McCarthy is saying: “Your conference doesn’t determine whether you’re a Republican or Democrat. You get to determine that. And the way to go about it is exactly what I’m doing. I support Harriet in Wyoming. You’re going to find there’s going to be an event for Harriet next week. No one knows this. There’s more than 100 members that are co-sponsoring that,” McCarthy said in an interview with the Daily Caller. He continued, “Part of the reason why Liz isn’t doing her work for Wyoming. She’s not on natural resources. She gave that up. That’s the number one committee for Wyoming, you know, and the voters gets to decide whether you get to come to Congress. We get to decide whether you’re going to be in leadership or not. Liz Cheney was not doing the role as conference chair. That’s why she was removed.
- A straw poll conducted in January by the Wyoming Republican State Central Committee found that Harriet Hageman won 59 votes, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. Cheney won only 6 votes.
