With Fall midterm elections looming, vulnerable Congressional Democrats are hopping the fence to join republicans in calling for an end to mask mandates. While mandates garnered support at the beginning of the pandemic, their popularity has waned significantly over the past few months as COVID cases and hospitalizations have drastically declined.
- An Interparty fight is brewing between the White House and dissenting democrats over campaign messaging on mask mandates. The White House’s extension of federal mask mandates on public transportation further illustrates this Administration position on the matter.
- What vulnerable democrats are saying: “I’m completely over mask mandates,. I don’t think they make any sense anymore. I’m for whatever gets rid of mask mandates as quickly as possible,” Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.) in an interview with Axios. He continued, “I think you’re safer on an airplane than you are in a restaurant or at the gym, so I don’t know why we’re wearing masks in the air.”
- State-of-play: The Senate passed a resolution to nullify this administration’s public transportation mandates after it was extended through April 18 with a 57-40 vote, including eight democrats hailing from battleground states. A separate measure to overturn private business mandates passed the Senate but has not been brought to the floor for a vote in the House.
