Governor Glenn Youngkin took steps to secure elections in the Commonwealth over the weekend by appointing Susan Beals, a Republican and former member of the Chesterfield Electoral Board, as the new commissioner of the Virginia Department of Elections.
- A steadfast republican: new Department of Elections commission Susan Beals has served as a legislative assistant to Republican State Senator Amanda Chase and worked on the gubernatorial campaign of GOP candidate Ed Gillespie in 2017.
- State-of-play (UPDATE): republicans from the House and Senate in the highly partisan General Assembly have introduced legislation that would strip the governor of the authority to appoint an election commissioner and other election officials. The bills from each chambers are currently in conference. If the legislation becomes law the State Board of Elections would be given the authority to appoint its commissioner
- What’s next: if the proposal to strip the governor’s authority is not signed into law, Beal will face a confirmation hearing in the General Assembly’s next session.
